It was standing upright, a basically humanoid shape, only about eight feet tall and immensely stocky. Its body was very dark, mostly black, to have allowed it to hide in the shadows so well. Its belly was an ugly grayish-yellow color. Ivory colored, jagged mandibles worked on either side of a huge, fang-filled mouth snarling in its oval-shaped gray head.Kryschenn felt like she should know what it was. ((As a matter of fact, if she had a first edition AD&D Monster Manual with her, she could have flipped to page 98 in that venerable tome and found a picture quite similar to what they were facing.
)) But defining the creature wasn't her top priority. Staying out of its way was definitely a little more important at the moment.
"Don't let it get near you!" Diana shouted, apparently recognizing the subterranean predator for what it was. "They love to eat human flesh!"
"Omigod!" someone gasped at this.
Unfortunately, at that moment, Kryschenn, still not realizing what the creature was, made the horrible mistake of looking the creature directly in its four eyes.
A thick tangle of her own thoughts instantly clashed in her brain, snarling together and dragging everything down under its own weight. "What...what is that...thing?" she asked no one in particular, her sword lowering in uncertainty. "I...don't, I don't know what..." her voice trailed off, and she shook her head violently. She stared around blankly as if she had completely lost her bearings. "I don't understand what's going on," she said in utter confusion.
((For those who don't have access to the abovementioned Monster Manual, this is an umber hulk, a subterranean carnivore which has a fondness for human flesh. A gaze from its four eyes together can create an effect of confusion in the recipient of the stare.))
