Thothalas reached out with the silvery ball and let it touch the one of brillant fire Alexia held. Its throbbing flame seemed only to make the darkness stronger, and the elf couldn't help but feel a little fear. When the two spheres met, they seemed to repel each other for an instant, then slowly they grew together, a mass of chaos boiling between the two mages. The fire burned the elf's hands like ice, and he wasn't sure if he was screaming for the power made him blind and deaf. The nerves of his body were as dead as a leper until the fire brought them howling to life again. For an instant that lasted an eternity, he knew another's lusts and pains, fears and depravities, hopes and dreams. And in the background, lost in the luminous shadows, a giant strode like a wonderous nightmare, promising more power than the soul could claim and more pain then the heart could bear. For a moment, Thothalas understood this girl who had fallen into their lives, then the giant turned and stared the young elf directly in the eyes, into his soul. Then there was nothing but the flames and the spell already flowing from his mouth. A soft sound of metal striking stone brought his eyes open.
He stared at the cheap-looking piece of jewelry that lay between him and Alexia. The tarnished gold chain with its tear-drop charm was no prize unless you could see magic. Then the bauble was alive with mystic forces, swirling and knotting like a fantastic puzzle.
Thothalas seemed about to say something as he looked deep into the eyes of the fire-mage. Forgotten words formed on his tongue, but his mind could not remember. No matter.
"Success!" he called proudly holding the charm up for all to see.
He smiled at his compatriot in magic, stood and gave the charm to Sterling.
"Zakiyah needs to wear this, but she needs to keep it hidden. The thing is lit up like a Solstice Festival tree on the etheral plane. We don't any bad guys who can see magic asking too many questions."
The mage paused again as if he wanted to say more. Then he shook himself, gathered Cadbury and proceeded to the mirror.
"Let's see now. We've got a portal to make."
All and all, the sharing went very well. Thothalas was very pleased. Then why was Cadbury wiping a hidden tear from her eye as she and her mage started their toughest spell yet?
