"Get out of here, girl" Diana shouted, shoving Kryschenn backwards until she reached the wall of the pit. She somehow managed to keep one eye on the attacking creature and the other on the confused Highlander at the same time."What? Why?" Kryschenn demanded, knowing she ought to be upset at such treatment, but just not quite sure why.
"'Cause that thing looked square at you!" Diana explained hurriedly, silently offering her thanks that Kryschenn had not become so confused that she attacked her friends. "That's how they paralyze their prey! Now give me your foot!"
Blankly, Kryschenn offered her foot as Eric hopped into the pit to shield the two women from the umber hulk, which didn't seem quite so interested in them at the moment, not with everything else going on around it. Diana laced her fingers under Kryschenn's boot and said, "Okay, on the count of three, I'm going to hoist you up to Presto, got that? Now put your hands up so he can catch you."
"I don't get what you're doing," Krys said, nonetheless lifting her hands in the air as she had been told.
"One!"
"Remind me what the plan was again?"
"Two!"
"I need you to explAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!" Kryschenn shrieked as Diana finished her count and hefted the befuddled berserker. Presto and Varla caught her hands and finished hauling her over the rim of the pit. They dragged her back until her feet were no longer hanging over the edge, and then knelt beside her to figure out if she was all right.
"What just happened?" Krys asked uncertainly, shaking her head and sitting up. Her brain felt like what had once been a tidy ball of yarn before twenty or so ferocious kittens had played with it.
"That's an umber hulk," Presto said, deciding that she was basically going to be fine and helping her to stand. "If you look in their eyes, they can really mess your mind up. But don't worry, it will wear off quick. It's just that usually, anyone that gets confused by them winds up as dinner long before their head has a chance to clear."
"Oh, Kryschenn said vaguely, pretending to understand so she could have a little more time to make Presto's words make sense. "I...I should be down there fighting it, right? I have a sword, don't I?"
