The zoned-out look was there because Zakiyah was doing precisely that- trying to figure out what had happened to her book and quill. Though Validor hadn't yet answered her, he often waited until an appropriate moment to give her knowledge, and she wasn't in immediate need of it. (Rather like DM's ability to pop up unexpectedly...) "Outside," she said softly, wondering how she could have slept through someone picking up her precious book and moving it again. "Someone took it. And don't patronize me," she added irritably as Sterling shook her and told her not to quit. Just because he'd just rescued her from Venger didn't mean she'd gotten over her annoyance. Especially if he'd only rescued her on 'principle,' not because there was anything else he found at all redeeming about her... "But how will we get past the guards...?"
For upon Venger's howl of anguish and rage, the confusion below had turned into utter chaos, soldiers rushing up the steps and swaming around the castle in confusion- they would be spotted in moments....
