Zakiyah aimed a last indignant boot at Sterling's shin before stomping downstairs. One thing is certain, she certainly looked surly enough to be a prisoner. Those who recognized her from when she was brought in had no doubt of how miserable and humilated she was at the moment, from the fierce expression on her face.
The truth of the matter was, she should have been (and later would be) grateful for Sterling's distraction from what she'd witnessed in the tower. There were all manner of unpleasant memories that she'd relived in that brief time between her awakening and when Sterling's sword had.... Not that Venger had raped her or anything so horrible, oh, no.....what he'd done had been far worse. The sly bastard had arranged to be her first love in order to win her help, and THAT was a shame that one didn't live down, even after 600 years. Needless to say, there hadn't been a second love, not after that.
Whether he did it on purpose- which he might have, given how well he'd been able to read her before- or whether he simply did it out of spite, finding her as immediately annoying as she found him, her anger kept her from dwelling on the horrid visions that threatened to cloud her mind with panic and horror and shame. No, the only thought on her mind was getting out of the castle, finding her book, and finding a way to get even that wouldn't jeopardize them all.
It was on the stairway to the first floor that they encountered a group of pale and frightened guards charging up the stairs.....
