    What else can I do...?

Posted by Princess Diana on 8/29/2000, 3:57 pm , in reply to "Re: D*MN! That #@^%$ princess!"

Diana, being a princess, does not cringe under the barrage of accusations and evil looks thrown her way. She turns to Cassandra in particular, but her words are addressed to all of those present, including Dungeonmaster.

"I had a decision to make, and I've made it. Venger will spare the city, and has no use for it beyond what lies beneath. Once he has what he wants, he will leave us in peace. I'm doing this to PROTECT my people, not enslave them! How dare you, newcomers to this kingdom and indeed to this world, question my judgement on the matter? Do you think I WISH to give Venger more power here? Unless you can tell me a better plan to deal with his threat of destruction, I will surrender the city to him as planned."

For a moment, her resolve seems to waver. She spreads her hands. "I am open to sug--"

A tall man with black hair and a curling goatee leans down to whisper in her ear and she pauses. His hand grips her upper arm firmly- at one point she flinches a little as if he'd jabbed her with something, or tightened his grip, but otherwise she takes no other notice of it. As he speaks to her, her resolve seems to firm once more. "That is all I have to say on the matter. I have discussed this at length and will hear no more of it."

She forces a smile and raises her arms, her voice echoing through the completely silent room. "Hear me, my citizens! We have nothing to fear! Venger has promised we shall remain free and safe, once he has what he wants. Do not let your minds dwell on it, this was intended to be a celebration! And I vow that, no matter what happens, we shall continue our masquarade this year, and the next, as we have done since the dawn of time!"

This was apparently intended to be a rousing speech, but it falls rather flat. There is only half-hearted, timid applause that quickly dies. The Princess looks unpreturbed and motions to the minstrels to begin their song again, apparently thinking that the interview with the Young Ones and the newcomers is at an end...she seems to have forgotten that DM is even there at all.
